Synergistic activities
Teaching and curriculum development
Until September 2002 I was the SIO Marine Biology Curricular Group Coordinator whose function is to coordinate and enhance marine biology teaching at SIO. In this role I developed a new Marine Biology Core course for all first year biology (marine biology and biological oceanography) graduate students. I also began a yearly MB graduate student symposium. I have also been a SURF Mentor (summer undergraduate program for underrepresented groups). In addition I regularly teach several courses and seminars.



Courses taught
Phytoplankton Diversity, SIO282, Graduate lecture and lab course.
Environmental Systems 101. Undergraduate core course for environmental systems major.
Diverse graduate seminars such as "Visualizing Cell Biology", "Cell cycle analysis in marine ecology", "Detection of microorganisms and their activities in the environment", "Phytoplankton Interactions".



Professional activities
Past editorial board member for Applied Environmental Microbiology (two terms), American Society for Microbiology ; Member and journal article reviewer for American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) and Phycological Society of America (PSA).
