Research work in the Tsuji Laboratory is in three main areas: chemistry and molecular biology of bioluminescence in squids (Symplectoteuthis, Eucleoteuthis), fishes (Porichthys, Apogon) and polychaete worms (Odontosyllis); protein structure and function including studies on the mechanism of bioluminescence in Watasenia (squid) and deep-sea fishes (myctophids and hatchet fishes); and biological oxidation, more specifically, determination of the amino acid sequence of Cypridina (crustacean) and Apogon (fish) luciferases, cloning of the luciferase genes, and site-specific mutagenesis.
