The primary research interests of the Sala laboratory are the present and historical ecology of coastal ecosystems, the impacts of fishing on these ecosystems and the design of marine protected areas. Sala's team are working with the World Wildlife Fund, Conservation International and other non-governmental organizations on the design of a marine reserve network in the Gulf of California, Mexico. Other interests are the study of interactions between species, and food webs.
