The evolution of life has been driven by natural processes involving changing physical as well as biological parameters and interactions. The understanding of evolution is therefore greatly enhanced by a holistic, historical prospective achieved by the study of whole organisms, including their morphology and systematics as well as their ecology and historical biogeography.
