Dr Jeremy Jackson Professor of Oceanography; Director, Geosciences Research Division (GRD) Scripps Institution of Oceanography University of California San Diego La Jolla, CA 92093-0244 USA Phone: 858 822 2616 Fax: 858 822 3310 Email: jbjackson@ucsd.edu Street Address: 8675 Biological Grade, 304 Vaughan Hall, La Jolla, CA 92037 USA Related website: http://www.oceanrx.org The Jackson Laboratory covers a broad range of marine ecological and geological topics, with emphasis on changes to the environment over a geological time scale. Research includes ecology and paleoecology of coral reefs, speciation and extinction and paleobiology and macroevolution particularly with regard to bryozoans and mollusks. Most recently, Jackson has been leading an international study on overfishing as a cause of declining fish populations in three coastal ecosystems: kelp forests, estuaries and coral reefs. Records reaching back hundreds of years indicate that historical overfishing was the primary driver of the collapse of most coastal ecosystems worldwide. Current baselines for fisheries management and conservation badly underestimate the affect of traditional fishing on functioning marine ecosystems and the size of pristine populations. However, we can use historical perspective to design new and scientifically rigorous strategies for the sustainable development of the oceans.
