We concentrate on the phenomenon of symbiosis. In particular, we study the intracellular symbiosis of chemoautotrophic bacteria with marine invertebrates. This symbiosis has originally been discovered at hydrothermal vents but also exists in other reducing environments. Within this research area, the work in the lab currently includes molecular evaluations of this symbiosis (genome sequencing, expressing of genes), metabolic adaptations (tolerance to anaerobiosis, metabolic interactions between the partners, role of D-amino acids), and evolutionary aspects (morphological changes in the host).
