We are interested in identifying genes and cell processes required for various adaptations of marine microorganisms. Much of our past research has included investigations of low temperature, and high pressure adaptation by deep-sea bacteria, including the regulation of the production of unsaturated fatty acids, some of which are of biotechnological value. More recently we have begun to address the diversity and activity of microorganisms associated with methane hydrates in moderate depth marine sediments. Finally, in collaboration with Prof. Farooq Azam, also in MBRD, we are characterizing factors which influence the survival and distribution of the human pathogen Vibrio cholerae in coastal waters. We love to isolate novel mutants and uncover new genetic circuits operating in marine prokaryotes. Future studies will also incorporate various aspects of functional genomics to the above studies.
