We concentrate on the phenomenon of symbiosis. In particular, we study the intracellular symbiosis of chemoautotrophic bacteria with marine invertebrates. This symbiosis has originally been discovered at hydrothermal vents but also exists in other reducing environments. Within this research area, the work in the lab currently includes molecular evaluations of this symbiosis (genome sequencing, expressing of genes), metabolic adaptations (tolerance to anaerobiosis, metabolic interactions between the partners, role of D-amino acids), and evolutionary aspects (morphological changes in the host).

Research Areas

  • Physiology of hydrothermal vent community animals
  • Interactions between invertebrates and chemoautotrophic bacterial symbionts
  • Molecular approaches to study the metabolism of bacterial symbionts

Professor of Marine Biology

  • ex. Morphological and Molecular Phylogenetics of Fishes
  • ex. Marine Biogeography
