New Boat Operator Authorization Procedure
First contact Eddie Kisfaludy and submit your experience as the primary operator of small boats while operating in the ocean. This description should include the types of vessels, estimated time as primary master, and the environments in which you operated the boats. If determined as an elagible MBRD boat operator canidate, proceed with the following steps:
- Watch the new Marine Biology Boat Training Video in HD
- Review the Procedure for Launching a Boat from Scripps Pier
- Print out and review the Boating Handbook, paying particular attention to the Weather and Emergency Procedures sections
- Print out the Boat Launching Checklist
- Review the Most Common Boat Launching Mistakes
- Take the Online Course for Small Boating. When you pass, you will
receive your boating safety education certificate, approved by the California
Department of Boating & Waterways, by mail. After about 4-6 weeks, your certificate will arrive. Send a copy to Eddie Kisfaludy. MC: 0202. (You do not need to have a certificate copy in hand before you schedule a boat checkout)
- E-mail Eddie Kisfaludy to schedule a checkout and be sure to bring the Boat Launching Checklist and Boating Handbook with you along with a hat and sunglasses.
Scheduling a Whaler
Scheduling an MBRD whaler is easy. After receiving your login information and boat key, proceed to Schedule Pointe and follow the instructions on the home page.

Remember that for small boat, near-shore operations, PIs are
expected to ensure that the boat meets applicable boating safety regulations of the USCG,
state and local authorities, and to exercise prudent judgement about the safety
of such operations.
